"The Second Ice Age approaches. The temperatures will only get worse, leaving me and all I hold dear to the bitter wind and seething ice. I say my prayers, for I fear this may be the end. I can hear the mighty mammoths footsteps approaching already, my time draws near."

"[Name], would you get dressed and come down here please?"

The girl groaned from underneath her comforter, closing her journal and tucking the pen into the wire spiral.

"Yeah, give me a second!" she called back, throwing the blanket off of her and placing her book on the shelf where it belonged. The blinds were open, and when she glanced out all she saw was the icy window pane, her only barrier against the freezing temperatures outside. She fussed at the very thought of going outside in below zero temperatures. She didn't want to believe it, but getting dressed obviously meant her mother wanted her to go out.

"Sigh and bear it," she told herself. She simply threw on a few layers of clothes, pajama pants and sweaters, followed by her winter coat, hat, scarf, and mittens. Any more clothing and she'd have to roll anywhere she wanted to go, but any less and she'd freeze to death in two seconds. With all the layers, she just might be lucky enough to make it to six.

Waddling down the stairs, she made her way to the kitchen and grabbed her snow boots from beside the door. Her mother stood by the stove, looking through various boxes on the counter. She sighed and tapped her fingers on the granite counter, and her daughter waited patiently for her to speak.

"Wouldn't you say this is the perfect time for some of my homemade Hot Chocolate?" her mother asked, not taking her eyes off the boxes. [Name] whipped her head around, nodding eagerly. That would drive the thought of the weather right out of her mind! Her mother smiled back, turning and leaning against the counter.

"I think so too, but I'm all out of baking cocoa. Would you take the car and go up to the store to get me some please?" Groaning. Her mother rolled her eyes and grabbed the keys out of the dish on the counter, jingling them. "Come on, dear, this is one of the only times I'll let you use my car."

[Name] pouted quite clearly, but with a disgruntled sigh, she swiped the keys from her mothers hand and put on her other boot. Her mom giggled and wished her well, and with that she got herself out the front door and ran all the way to the car. Without the wind, it was already below zero, so now it was just an ungodly terror. She got herself in the car and started it up, cranking the heat dials with shivering hands. For a few minutes she waited for the car to warm up, rubbing her hands together. She was lucky that they hadn't put the driving ban on her state, even Mama's hot chocolate wasn't worth walking to the grocery store in this weather.

When the engine was ready to go and the car was heated up, she backed out of the driveway carefully, watching for any ice that may have frozen. With caution she hadn't used in a long time, she began to drive the two-mile journey, keeping at an even 25 miles per hour. It didn't seem like that was a problem, she was the only one on the road. The cold scared people out of their wits, and if she was honest, it was no different with her.

Soon enough, she made it to the grocery store, and though the parking lot was near empty, it was still open. Odd, but fortunate. At least she wasn't coming out here for nothing. She turned the car off and took the key out of the ignition, stepping out once again into the chill. She slammed the door behind her and bolted for the entrance, dodging and jumping over ice patches until she made her way inside the sliding glass doors. It was just as empty inside as it was outside, with only one register open. That poor cashier.

Wasting no time, [Name] made her way right to the spices aisle and began to search for the Hershey's Cocoa her mother needed. She scanned the aisle with quick footsteps, not focused on anything but simply finding the cocoa and getting the hell out of here and back to the warmth of her bed where she belonged. She was so absorbed in searching for her needed ingredient that she didn't notice the person approaching her until he was tapping on her shoulder.

"Yes?" she turned around only to be greeted with the apathetic expression of one of her school friends.

"Hey [Name]," Dirk greeted, a tilted smirk on his usually oh-so-stoic features. She smiled back, turning towards the shelf and reaching for the cocoa powder.

"Hello Dirk. What brings you here in this delightful weather?" She turned back to look at him again, arching her brow questionably.

"Oh, it is delightful. My coolness creates a cancellation effect so I remain perfectly fine." She rolled her eyes, and he smiled gently in return. She gestured her head towards the front of the store, walking to the register with the cocoa in hand. Dirk followed, shoving his hands into the pockets of his hoodie.

"Well, I'm only out here to grab some stuff for Ma. What're you buying?" Dirk's eyebrows raised, and she guessed that behind his shades, his eyes were widened.

"Oh, Ms.[Mom's First Name], how's she doing? Oh, right, uh, I just came to get some Doritos, but right before you showed up, my bro called and told me he had found some, so I'm about to prance my way back home empty handed." [Name] chuckled at his little stutter, he was never really the best at socializing. She gave the cashier her money and the cocoa, then turned back to Dirk.

"Ma's doing fine, she sent me out to drive up here to get that, so I'm not. But, hey. Funny thing is, I don't remember seeing your car out in the parking lot." She rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "In fact, wasn't your car in the mechanics shop for something just the other day?" At this, Dirk began to rub the back of his head, his eyes finding their way to the floor.

"Well, you know...Uh...My house wasn't that far, so I kind o-"

"You walked?!" [Name] exclaimed, jaw dropping in shock. "Dirk, it's below zero out there, you don't even have a proper coat!"

"See, that's why I didn't want to tell you." Dirk looked almost ashamed, and [Name] sighed, taking her money and the grocery bag from the cashier and grabbing Dirk's hand.

"Come on," she said, tugging him behind her as she made her way to the door. Dirk stared blankly at the hand she was holding, and she was unable to read the expression on his face. "I'm not letting you walk home in this. You can come back to my place for hot chocolate."

"No, I couldn't bother you for it," Dirk mumbled, so quietly she almost didn't hear it.

"I don't care, don't ever worry about it." She got up the the car and unlocked the doors, walking around to the drivers side while Dirk opened the passenger door and slid inside.

"Hey, uh, thanks. For this. I me-it's nice. That you'd do this for me." Dirk seemed almost at a loss for words, so [Name] just smiled at him and handed him the cocoa bag.

"No problem, Dirk-a-dirk. I'd be a shitty friend to let you walk home in this, I think I prefer you, y'know, not dead and frozen." She started the car and began their slow trip back home, keeping an even eye on the roads while he sat patiently beside her. She finally got onto her street, and carefully backed her way into the driveway, turning the car off and stepping outside. She quickly ran up to the front porch, motioning for Dirk to follow quickly, which he obliged to. She smiled at him, which he kindly returned, then whipped around and opened the door.

"I'm home!" she called, pointing at the table for Dirk to put down the bag, "Mom, I brought home a friend."

"Did you?" her mom rounded the corner, smiling in delight at Dirk. "Ohh, sweetie, how nice it is to see you." Dirk nodded politely, and walked to go sit in the living room. She smiled and turned to [Name], grabbing the cocoa off the table.

"Perfect, just what I needed. You go sit with your friend, and the hot chocolate will be ready soon."

"Thanks Ma!" she called, kicking off her boots and walking into the living room as well. Dirk was already on the couch, his shoes tucked underneath the side table, and his hoodie draped over the armchair. Underneath it was only his signature hat wifebeater, and that just made the fact that he had walked even worse for [Name].

"It's been a while since I came over here, but everything looks the same," Dirk commented absently, watching [Name] closely as she sat beside him and pulled off all her heavy clothing.

"Yeah, we don't do a lot of redecorating. But Mom's been up to a lot, if you've got the time."

"All the time in the world. Damn man we're just drowning in time. Hope you're up for rebuilding Noah's Ark because we're screwed." He looked ready to keep spewing his extended metaphor, but [Name]s curiously arched eyebrow cut him off and he motioned for her to continue.

"Well," she started, and she began to talk about all he had missed. What her Mom had been up to, what was going on at home, how everyone was doing, this and that. Dirk listened patiently, adding in a small comment where it seemed due, and before either of them knew it, a large mug of homemade hot chocolate with whipped cream was placed in their hands.

"You two enjoy, now. I'm going upstairs to take a quick nap." Her mom smiled at the two of them before turning and walking up the stairs, leaving them to their drinks. [Name] smiled joyfully and began to sip on her hot chocolate, while Dirk placed his on the table and waited for it to cool for a minute or two. He instead turned to look at [Name] who was gulping down her hot chocolate, temperature be damned. He smiled again, pulling his shades off and placing them on the side table as well, letting her see his fiery eyes. She pulled her cup away to smile at him, and his eyebrow quizzically rose at all the whipped cream she had neglected to wipe off.

"You've uh, got something." She blinked, and Dirk shook his head, a blush slowly forming on his cheeks at the way her [e/c] orbs stared intensely into his uncovered eyes. He pointed to his lips, and she let out a small "oh!" of realization and wiped her mouth. When she pulled her hand away, most of it was gone, but a little dollop still clung to her cheek. He almost pointed it out, but when an idea rose in his brain, he couldn't help himself from blushing even more.

"Dirk, you alright?" Your face is red," [Name] said, moving his bangs aside to feel his forehead with the back of her hand. "It might be from being outside too long." He sighed and shook his head, reaching up to pull her hand away and hold it in his own.

"N-No, you didn't get it all." She nodded and moved to wipe her mouth again, but he held her free hand tight. "No, I got it."

With only a slight hesitation, he leaned forward and brushed his lips against [Name]'s cheek, taking the whipped cream with them. He pulled away, looking at [Name] carefully to gauge her reaction. She blinked, eyes wide and he almost considered snapping his fingers in her face to get her attention away from her 1,000 yard stare.

"Dirk..." she whispered suddenly, seeming to focus all at once on him. He uncomfortably squirmed under her gaze, clenching his jaw and preparing for the inevitable rejection of his feelings. She took her hot chocolate in both hands and, surprising him to no end, brought it up to her lips, and she rubbed her face around before coming out with a mouth covered in whipped cream.

"Whoops!" she exclaimed loudly, putting her hot chocolate on the other end table, "looks like I need to get the rest of this off too!" She smiled and jumped forward, planting her lips on his firmly, which he gladly returned. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tight, and despite the joking nature that started the kiss, [Name] was kissing back with all the sincerity and passion he could have hoped for.

To be honest, he would have preferred a more professional, or better yet, serious confession, but with [Name], this was probably going to work out a lot better in his favor anyway. She finally pulled away after almost a minute, licking her lips and looking up at him.

"S'about time, you big butt. I've been waiting for that since you tried flirting with me at Jake's movie night. But I haven't heard a date request yet," she said quietly, snuggling into him happily. He smiled, rubbing his thumb on her cheek.

"Shit, yeah. Would you like to go out to dinner sometime?" he asked, and she pulled away from him, grabbing her hot chocolate and taking a large gulp.

"Yes, but only if you drink your hot chocolate." He smiled and picked his up, taking a small sip and grinning at her.

"Oh, you got something on your lip. Let me get that for you!"

Ahhhh kisses.

This has been in my drafts since that huge cold front a while back, and I'm trying to finish up the stuff that I started. I hope you all enjoy it, because I really liked writing this one! ♥
